Hip-Hop Albums of the Year

Joyner Lucas — ADHD

Several commercial mistakes are the fundaments for the failure of Joyner Lucas' debut album, starting with the unintelligent choice of releasing about ten singles on an album with a dozen tracks.

The concept of the performer is simple to guess, but it's only hinted at by some bad scattered bars that composes lyrics never inspired and spat with a rapping as fast as tasteless, monotonous and devoid of substance. The project is plagued by countless embarrassing deficits: from production — there are more beatmakers than tracks — watered down and generic, very weak and discouraging in its gray mediocrity, to the ridiculous hooks, to the themes that the rapper never fully explores, attempting without success of follow the pop trap trends of the moment and simply create annoyingly useless skits and some pseudo-conscious and cumbersome songs in which he limits to selecting himself as the only one carrier of real rap, disgusting the rest, but spending more time singing than rapping. It's a slow, cumbersome, exhausting, difficult album to deal with, especially if you've met the rapper's other projects: he gets it all wrong (cover included, annoying), always easily overcome by guests, even by a Logic that seems to be in freefall, puts out one of the worst rap albums of the year with no chance of replication.

Former talented Joyner Lucas brings out one of the most disappointing albums of 2020. I think the whole album can be summed up with a line that also demonstrates its excessive and unjustifiable inconsistency: «I attack mumble rappers, but I put Young Thug on it.»

Rating: 2.5/10.
