MC Melodee & Cookin Soul — My Tape Deck

Collaborative album between MC Melodee and Cookin Soul.

Intro with skit, then short verse by MC Melodee on a simple, lively and scratched jazzy boom bap. A jazzy rhythm follows with a minimal and heavy drum machine, good calm and relaxed delivery by MC Melodee which gives life to an excellent contrast with the rhythm. The third cut is an excellent boom bap light jazzy with skeletal and minimal drum machine, female soulful sample looped in the background for the hook, light and quiet delivery by MC Melodee. Another splendid beat for the next piece, "Exale", quiet delivery and catchy pop hook by MC Melodee, excellent quiet jazzy rhythm with skeletal and minimal drum machine, syncopated, Cookin Soul creates a lively and modern landscape to facilitate the smooth delivery of the rapper female. A short skit follows, before the "Don't Front" remix: splendid boom bap jazzy, excellent delivery by MC Melodee, who here doesn't disappoint over a beat that recalls 1994 and that would be perfect for Omar Credle flow, of DITC. The first featuring of the tape arrives in "Firstborn": decent boom bap jazzy with skeletal and minimal drum machine, good delivery by MC Melodee with good pop catchy hook, then Pharcyde arrive to liven up the album with a little freshness.

A good light jazzy rhythm follows that contrasts with the rough, heavy and minimal drum machine, simple hook of MC Melodee which doesn't seem inspired in her delivery here. Subsequently, Fiend returns energy to the song with an acceptable vibrant and flow delivery. "Games You Play" presents a discreet jazzy rhythm, light and minimal drum machine, good delivery by MC Melodee. The tenth choice is "Balance", also here the rapper does not seem particularly inspired between delivery and hook, despite a simple jazzy beat, a little patinated and a minimal and light, very soft drum machine. The last track is among the best of the tape, with a light and ethereal jazzy beat, completely minimal drum machine that offers a light and almost imperceptible boom bap (well, not really, but calmer than this is difficult to do, honestly), MC Melodee delivers to a calmer / quieter level than the drum machine itself, and it's the only reason you can hear it in the background; there's a soulful female sample looped in the background that pervades the entire track while the MC is also busy on the hook. Overall, it's a good light and calm, relaxing track.

Pretty nice record, relaxing with good beats and almost good rapping.

Highlights: "Ain't My Style", "Firstborn", "Up in the Clouds".

Rating: 7/10.
