Tribute tape to Nas' "Illmatic". One of the finest tapes by Cookin Soul.
The opening song is a skit by Nas on a dope jazzy musical carpet, with scratches from "Illmatic". Then "Life's a Bitch" remix, classic by Cookin Soul: intro by Nas & AZ, splendid jazzy-soulful light beat with deep female soulful and dope elegant piano keys in background, then starts AZ with its dope verse over a light, heavenly jazzy production, with a simple and minimal drum machine that support fully the smoothness flow of Anthony Cruz. After the hook, Nas delivers over the same musical carpet, at his best in career. It's one of the best version (to me the best one) of "Life's a Bitch". Skit of Nas on jazzy light rhythm, with simple drum machine, then "The World Is Yours": splendid boom bap jazzy by Cookin Soul, elegant piano keys, beautiful production. Another skit, over lively jazzy boom bap. "One Love" presents a male soul sample looped in background, pretty agile boom bap, and light jazzy rhythm to support the smoothness flow of Nasir Jones in one of his finest works. After that, there are two skits on light jazzy boom bap before the last track remixes by Cookin Soul, "It Ain't Hard to Tell": solid drum machine, sample soulful looped in background, good tight jazzy beat. Outro on Nas that talks about his legendary debut album over a simple jazzy boom bap.
Highlights: "Life's a Bitch", "The World Is Yours", "One Love", "It Ain't Hard to Tell".
Rating: 8.5/10.
