First extended play by Benny the Butcher, rapper from Buffalo, New York. Production is created by al.divino, Louie Davison, Trickytrippz, Bobby Made the Beat and Swick Rubin. Skyzoo is the only guest of the EP.
The title track opens the project: experimental rhythm by al.divino, chaotic drums, thick synth line that destroys the beat, Benny spits a unique verse. The second choice is an highlight of the whole tape, "Cold November". Louis Davison behind the keys, sample from David Coverdale's "Blindman", flipped chipmunk by the beatmaker, light skeletal drum, then crazy hi-hats, guitar plucked strings in loop, two stanzas by the Buffalo emcee with a velvet delivery. The third pick boasts a good boom bap crafted by Trickytrippz, roaring bass line, piano keys layered in loop, light drum, Benny destroys the beat with a dope flow, single verse, then hook.
Bobby Made the Beat realizes the rhythm for "1996": sample from Ann Peebles' "Trouble, Heartaches & Sadness", splendid horns loop, cheap drum, the rapper delivers a couple of stanzas and a chorus. Swick Rubin arrives behind the keyboards for the fifth choice: horns in loop, hard chaotic drum, rough bass, Skyzoo opens at the first verse, then the Butcher kills the track. Bobby Made the Beat comes back behind the keys for the last track, "Murder for Glory": ghostly vocal sample looped in background, solid bass line, light drum, Benny offers a personal track with a final extra-verse to close his first EP.
Both the bonus tracks are among the high points of the record. "Dirty Needles" is extracted from the album "My First Brick", and "Illegal Life" comes directly from "Benny Best Ever", in this last one, Benny offers one of his best performances on a trap rhythm.
Rating: 7/10.
