O.G. Style — I Know How to Play 'Em!

In 1991, Eric "MC Prince Ezzy-E" Woods and DJ Boss released their only album as OG Style, produced by Rap-A-Lot Records, which was probably not a major at the time, but was the most important label for the rappers of the south.

Woods' lyricism is mediocre and his delivery style is simplistic, effortless but good, it allows him to create several quite solid tunes on a lively funky DJ Boss production. Overall, this album is decent, it doesn't have too many weak songs and when you start to get used to the minimal rhythms, it flows pretty worthlessly without too many stops (the "Free World" and "Shout Outs" skits are bad: the first one is sung badly on drum machine thin and slow, the second one has an extravagant rhythm).

"Funny Payback" goes among the finest pieces of this record: jazzy rhythm simple and lean, but fresh, irregular drum machine that works well here, dope bridge on the functional hook, excellent guessed sample, good slow syncopated delivery by Woods. "Catch 'Em Slippin" is another good joint and their best-known cut, a sort of jazzy-funky dissing to Raheem, which was in the staff of Rap-A-Lot itself. "Listen to the Drum" has a minimal, slow, good rhythm, decent delivery, light-hearted, fast, regular drum machine that brings out a good boom bap.

Rating: 6/10.
