Second short EP by Benny the Butcher. The Griselda rapper teams up with Italian-born producer Cuns and titles this effort under the name Tommy DeVito.
It's a name that doesn't tell you anything, fine. It doesn't say anything to me either. But, if I remove "DeVito" and leave only the name, in a mafia contest "Tommy" should stand out: the tribute is one to be appreciated, "Goodfellas", '95. The first track pays homage to De Palma classic movie in the title and to Tommy's character played by Joe Pesci in "Goodfellas". Benny drops a unique verse full of drug bars and bravado over a cinematic rhythm by Cuns, boom bap hard with bouncy synth lines, simple and minimal drum machine, without brakes and tight delivery by Benny.
"Black Caesar" follows, a tribute to the 1973 eponymous movie: splendid jazzy rhythm, simple, midtempo, with a deep bass line and sample of sax looped far and deep in the background, excellent delivery of the emcee, good delivery of Big Twins, the only guest of the tape, the guys keep the cut in the streets. On the third joint, Cuns provides a nice simple jazzy beat, essential boom bap, lean hi-hats, good bass line, nice piano scales, sample from Stephen Schlaks' "Cascades", excellent delivery of Benny, dope coke rap tune. The remix of the first choice closes this extended play: tight rhythm, another attempt to create a cinematic beat, heavy and minimal drum machine, good cut not inferior to the original.
Rating: 6/10.
