Above the Law — Vocally Pimpin' EP

The extended play is entirely produced by Cold 187um, co-produced by Above the Law, with instrumentals played by Stan "The Guitar" Man (bass, guitar) and B-Laid Back Edwards (keyboards). Kokane is the unique guest of the effort in "4 the Funk of It". The tape is composed by a first part made of new material by the group, and by a second part made of edited versions of their previously released material or remixes.

Above the Law doesn't lose its polish in their second effort, dated 1991: excellent EP of Illmaticly length that flows well through the pre-g funk rhythms made by Cold 187um, whose delivery is relaxed and effective. Together with KMG, the two build several honest tracks, boasting a simple, funky-jazzy and slow production, with a sparse and minimal drum machine, syncopated and sometimes distant in order to give value to the performers' braggadocio and gangsta bars. The guys fish good samples from Curtis Mayfield, Bob James, Barry White, George Clinton, Lou Donaldson, Rufus Thomas and Ohio Players.

Released by Ruthless and Epic, leaded by the single "4 the Funk of It" that charts Hot Rap Singles, the EP received considerable commercial response, entering both the pop and rap charts. 6/10.
