Paris — Guerrilla Funk

Third studio album in five years for the San Francisco-born rapper Paris. The Conscious Daughters, who also provide the background on several tracks, and Mystic are the only guests on the album, while Paris himself is the creator of the whole production.

The artist realizes remarkable music, choosing the g-funk color to paint his sound pictures, pulling out boom bap beats with tight and robust drums, hard midtempo, some synths and excellent melodic funky samples, which pay homage directly or indirectly to George Clinton and to some rap songs: among the many, Gap Band's "Yearning for Your Love" stands out, which in the same year was used as the background for "Life's a Bitch".

Lyrically, Paris again tackles political and socio-conscious topics, with some personal excerpt, reciting his lyrics with a dynamic and confident flow: overall the album is very good, however, is less than the two previous releases of the MC, also due to the fact that the performer sounds less aggressive and angry than in previous years and adopts a fluid, calm and fluent style, partially abandoning the hardcore delivery. Distributed by Priority, the album sells fairly well (top 20 rap records) and is positively received by critics, boasting the title track as a distinctive cut, where Paris flows dope on a hard beat better than the others.

Rating: 7.8/10.
