Willie D — Play Witcha Mama

After leaving the Geto Boys, William Dennis also leaves Rap-A-Lot and releases his third independent studio album. Here the guy has fun and jokes the listener from the very first moments, spitting bars on anything with a more relaxed style than his previous efforts and happily cheap g-funk production.

If the sound veers to Cali, Willie D keeps the record firmly rooted in Houston, Texas, with local producers and guests, even if that means sacrificing both musical and lyrical quality. The only external guests are the Lost Boys of New York and Ice Cube of Los Angeles. Rhythms are mainly provided by Grizz, while Crazy C and Willie D complete the work behind the keyboards. Rapper Sho is the main guest of the edition, followed by Rasir X.

None of these hardly ever impress, they're all quite generic between rap and beats: simple boom baps, midtempo drums, decent samples, abundant synths everywhere, sometimes light and decent, sometimes poor, annoying and haunting. On these faint sounds, the Houston MC tries to cover as many topics as possible in the vast land of g rap, from vice to horrorcore, giving a clear south flavor to the record.

Released by Wrap Records via Wize Up Records, the album gains Ichiban distribution which allows it to compete adequately in the vast hip-hop market of the season, finishing close to the top 30 on Billboard's rap chart. Consisting of 16 substantial tracks (4-5 minutes minimum) for a total approaching 70 minutes, the album is a long and grueling swan song for Willie D, who will soon return to the Geto Boys nest, in the waning phase of their career too.

Highlights: "Is It Real (My Mind Still Playin' Tricks on Me)", "Play Witcha Mama".

Rating: 5.7/10.
