Mixtape by Benny the Butcher, second in 2016, but that's really what allowed him to take the first step towards glory. The choice to design the cover so that the word "brick" is made up of bricks is a touch of class. One of the newest records of the last waves of drug rap, lyrically, Benny is focused on braggadocio, thug, and drug themes.
A trapping boom bap crafted by Cash Money AP introduces the whole project, great delivery from Benny that continues to go strong even in later pieces. "My Struggle" features Bentlee as a guest on the R&B hook on a good bouncy jazzy beat with sample soul in the background. "Tom Ford Socks" is a Griselda tune, sample from "Tombe La Neige" by André Popp, great essential deep jazzy boom bap, work by Jimmy Dukes, excellent delivery by Conway in the first verse, chorus by Westside Gunn, and deadly closure by Benny killing the track.
The Machine remains for the next piece, boom bap jazzy simple, the producer Chase adds to it a splendid dilated soulful background, dope deliveries of the host and of the Butcher. Rick Hyde delivers a dark trap rhythm with calm piano for "All I Know", with Lo Profile and Rick Hyde himself as guests. The rapper from Buffalo delivers bars with a great rapping on Daringer's first beat, a quirky jazzy musical carpet with a sample from The Cool's "Emily Waits".
"Just Like Rome" has a trapping, pounding and skeletal boom bap rhythm, with a bad background, Benny delivers worthily but is clearly not comfortable with this Jay Marvil$ production choice. The eighth song has a beautiful tight and pounding jazzy boom bap, underground vibes, good Benny's rushed delivery. The track precedes "3 Missiles": tense, essential and somber jazzy boom bap provided by Daringer, sample by Alain Goraguer's "Au Delà De La Peur", Conway and 38 Spesh to keep Griselda vibes, despite a spoken delivery style by this trio. The ending of the tape doesn't disappoint, featuring two excellent tracks, "Bible on the Coffe Table", splendid light jazzy rhythm, gloomy and dark, and "Prayer Hands", amazing boom bap jazzy soulful, tight, underground and New York [rhythm], a masterpiece in production thanks to a sample from "Love Without Sex" by Gwen McCrae.
Highlights: "Tom Ford Socks", "Dirty Needles", "3 Missiles", "Bible on the Coffee Table", "Prayer Hands".
Rating: 7/10.
