Lil Ramsey — Goin Undacova

The only cassette released by Ramsey McDowell, a rapper from Memphis known under the moniker Lil Ramsey. The production is entirely entrusted to Tommy Wright, who's also the unique guest of the record, uncredited.

The first track features a single line looped in the background over minimal dark rhythm and haunting dark samples, to support the rapper's syncopated delivery. "Magnolia" has wailing synths and dark vibes, a good interpretation of Ramsey, which finds its apex in the acclaimed "Bitch It's a Hold Up", that you can find below the title "Kickin' in Doors": background snare drum + essential skeletal downtempo drum, dark samples, smooth delivery by Lil Ramsey, closes Tommy Wright.

The fourth pick boasts a gorgeous dark piano sample, downtempo drum and smooth delivery from Ramsey. The MC delivers together with Tommy Wright also in "Magnolia Crime Click", on minimal rhythm with decent samples and midtempo drum machine. Wright's production is also solid in the final part of the tape: the sixth cut features a dark flute sample, slow and incessant midtempo drum and a regular delivery by Lil Ramsey. Tommy Wright gets a third spot in "Game Fucked Up", spitting bars on a downtempo drum. It closes the eighth choice, on another downtempo drum with dark samples.

Released by Tommy Wright's Street Smart Records, the cassette achieved some success locally, however, despite the past proximity to the Triple Six Mafia, Lil Ramsey didn't release any other material in the following years, ending his career immediately. Composed of 8 tunes and half an hour of listening, it's a recommended listen to fans of the Memphis scene, where the production stands out on the regular rap.

Rating: 7/10.
