Yet another G-album released in the mid-nineties, but it's done really well, unlike most of the other gangsta LPs you might encounter around the same time from more well-known artists. Street Thugs (StreeThugs) is an Oakland-born hip-hop group consisting of Sean "Nutt-So" Cole (Keyshia Cole's brother) and a couple of other guys.
They record their only album for two independent Bay Area labels: it's produced by GO Twice, along with Bust a Bitch and Chucksta, while the guests are Duce Life, Piesor, AMW, Confusion, Jet, NTO and Next 2 Kin. The tape maintains its coherence and a commendable replay value by retaining 9 tracks (2 skits) and 37 minutes overall: production is great, simple funky boom bap with good bass lines, relaxed mobb and g-funk samples, and a slow pounding drum, rhythms on which the guys spit gangsta and hardcore lyrics in a calm, light-hearted and fluent way.
The album lacks weak choices, but the best moments seem to come in the second part: "Based on a True Story" has a fantastic, accessible and relaxing rhythm, while the title track is impressive, the soundscape chosen by Chucksta is close to perfection, combining fast and tight drum with haunting samples, on which the guys perform their lyrics with a slow and regular hardcore delivery style, dope cut. It's certainly one of the best g-funk albums of the season.
Rating: 8/10.
