Debut album by Blahzay Blahzay, duo composed of producer Felix "PF Cuttin" Rovaira and rapper / producer Martell "Outloud" Ellis. Guests are La the Darkman, Smoothe da Hustler, Trigger tha Gabler, Mental Magician, Verbal Fist and Verbal Hoods.
The Brooklyn-based duo proves that they have studied some of the best East Coast records released in recent years, including those of KRS, Wu-Tang, Raekwon, Boot Camp Clik, Biggie Smalls and Jeru the Damaja, to which they are most inspired. Production is simple and static boom bap, it sounds consistently in these fifty minutes, with good loops, a more accessible drum than your typical New York hip-hop record and normal rapping by Outloud, even if he's lacking in personality and in a simple and unassuming lyricism.
The fact that the boys let the rhythms breathe for one minute (at least) in each song is almost exclusively typical of the RZA in this moment. The success of their single "Danger" allows Blahzay Blahzay to get a deal with Fader, a subsidiary of Mercury, part of the major PolyGram, even if the public response doesn't live up to expectations. The highlights can be found in the title track, in the second single "Pain I Feel" and in "Long Winded", over a fresh rhythm by PF Cuttin, while the remix of "Danger" sounds as good as the original thanks to the hardcore rap of the performers. 7/10.
