D-Nice — To tha Rescue

Second and final album in the career of Boogie Down Productions member D-Nice. Completely self-produced, it sees the presence of some noteworthy rappers (KRS-One, Treach, Too Short), but his themes are choppy and his lyrics too simple, poor.

The production is simplistic, sparse, minimal, some funky rhythms, jazzy elements, soulful hooks, all very random. The slow, syncopated, generic and smooth delivery of D-Nice is only livened up when he has to deal with guests, in those cases then he gets carried away by their energy with a slightly better, more lively delivery.

KRS is wasted on the intro and outro of "Rhymin' Skills", absurdly, a tune that has a pop-lame chorus, while the other two guests get along and provide a couple of interesting joints, despite the fact that Treach has to stay on two piano keys looped in the background and to Too Short a rhythm of an embarrassing poverty is reserved, there's practically only the slow and skinny drum machine.

Released by Jive and distributed by BMG Music, it spawned three singles (the title track, "25 ta Life" and "Time to Flow"), bringing what will be D-Nice's final solo album into the top thirty of hip-hop releases.

Rating: 6/10.
