Chunk — Chunk II: Still the Menace

Sophomore effort for Leon "Chunk" Ayiers, rapper from East Palo Alto, Bay Area. He arrives with a sequel to his debut, keeps gangsta themes and comes with a production entirely supplied by C-Funk, the disc's only guest in the misogynistic "Janky Hoes" track.

The MC boasts good technique and regular, energetic slow syncopated delivery, however, it's the great rhythms provided by C-Funk that allow it to take the tracks home, and in the end, the whole project. The producer creates a nice soundscape made up of honest, powerful funky boom baps, with a slow syncopated skinny drum machine, frantic and energetic to support the delivery of Chunk when it necessary. With no weak tunes, this is his best album.

The first and last track are the two highlights of the LP and feature a mix and an instrumental each in the finale. "What Waz I To Do" is the best cut of the tape: skinny and syncopated drum machine, splendid relaxed funky boom bap, beautiful, light, dope, Chunk's lyrics aren't surprising, his delivery is instead among the finest in his career, velvety, simple and effortless, excellent piece.

"On the Way to Heaven" features a lean and tight syncopated slow drum machine, lo-fi boom bap, slow smoothness syncopated delivery and functional hook with interesting bridge, formed by a light piano that has nothing to do with the rest of the funky beat, creating a whimsical contrast that somehow entertains you.

Rating: 7/10.
