Chubb Rock — The One

Third effort for Chubb Rock, probably his best. It keeps the production of the trusty Howie Tee, who here delivers a pattern of trivially simple, skeletal, minimal rhythms, a bit all similar to each other.

The delivery of Chubb Rock is syncopated and fluent, he presents a decent flow and a good technique with which he decides to drop different themes also touching the socio-conscious and the political, but without carving due to a generic choice in the texts. Chubb Rock goes strong with his singles ("The Chubbster" is the banger for the radio; among the first three cuts you will find the best songs) and also tries some less successful crossover ones. Except for "Another Statistic", which presents one of the most annoying samples ever and a rhythm that is almost not there and it's horrible, there are no peaks either up or down, it's an honest, decent, unpretentious record. Perhaps by eliminating a couple of tracks between the middle part and the second one, the album would be at a higher level and his identity and legacy as a rapper would be better preserved (he's still a Crooklyn Dodgers emcee).

Rating: 6/10.
