2 Live Crew — Is What We Are

2 Live Crew is born in Riverside, California, formed by David "DJ Mr. Mixx" Hobbs, Christopher "Fresh Kid Ice" Wong Won and Yuri "Amazing Vee" Vielot. The group releases the single "Revelation" in 1984 through is own label Fresh Beat Records, with the track "2 Live" as b-side, the first is performed only by Amazing Vee, the second by Fresh Kid Ice. "Revelation" got attention in Florida, so the Miami DJ and promoter Luther "Luke Skyywalker" Campbell advises the group to move to Miami.

2 Live Crew got success in Florida, and Fresh Kid Ice becomes the first Asian rapper to gain notoriety. The following year, the group releases a new single, "What I Live", with Fresh Kid Ice as only rapper featured, while Amazing Vee left the group. In 1986, 2 Live Crew publishes "Throw The D", a pioneer-cut for the future genre Miami bass, then Mark "Brother Marquis" Ross joins the group and Luke Skyywalker becomes the manager of the 2 Live Crew and gave them a record deal, joining the group as a hype-man. In the next summer, the group releases his debut album, "The 2 Live Crew Is What We Are" aka "2 Live is What We Are" aka "Is What We Are".

The group is one of the first to fully exploit the dirty potential that hip-hop could easily carry and their first LP is a hymn in that sense, popularizing the dirty rap through "We Want Some Pussy" and the hit "Throw The D", with simple and explicit lyrics over tight, fast and functional rhythms, good samples and scattered scratching provided by DJ Mr. Mixx. Published by Luke Records and distributed as independent, thanks to word of mouth, the tape flies and sells like hotcakes among kids, entering the Billboard 200 at #128, the rnb chart (#24), and gaining the certification of golden record by RIAA in 1988. Rated: X.
