Yo Gotti — Untrapped

Tenth album for Mario Mims, the ninth under the name of Yo Gotti. The veteran trapper builds one of his best works ever: the album is mostly braggadocio, with some sexual and political excerpts, but his lyrics are more mature than usual. In addition, it's helped by a good production, mainly done by Ben Billions, Streetrunner and Tarik Azzouz.

The Memphis rapper places several hit attempts for the club ("HOE", with a decent trap production; "Put a Date on It", "Pose"), but there are several great cuts. In "More Ready Than Ever", Yo Gotti seems ahead of the whole trap scene: perfect production by Streetrunner & Tarik Azzouz, trap rhythm, looped soul sample in the background that gives a solid background for the whole track, uncontrollable sick drum machine, and the rapper's slack and smooth delivery. "Big Home" features spoken delivery on beautiful light trap beat with soul samples, while "Untrapped" sees Estelle return in style, with a nice hook and sublime production, with soulful samples and livable snare drum for slow delivery smoothness by Yo Gotti.

The rhythm is provided by the usual Streetrunners and Azzouz, who don't even miss their other piece, "Trapped", creating an accessible rhythm with a vibrant drum. Guests provide good performances, for the most part, with Rick Ross ("Dopechella") and Lil Baby ("Put a Date on It") that stand out above the others: this latest choice is a hit for the club that doesn't have the best sound on the record, June James makes a cheap rhythm that sounds bad because of the shrill sample and a drum snare that leaves you no way out, but the track is saved by the "professional" delivery of Yo Gotti and Lil Baby, which lifts the piece with an incredible delivery.

Released by Epic, Roc Nation and his CMG, the LP achieves considerable commercial success (#10 in the pop chart, #6 in the rap chart), sadly ignored by critics: it's a consistent, solid and surprisingly pleasant disk by Yo Gotti, the result of excellent production and a smooth, fit and effortless rapping.

Highlights: "Trapped", "More Ready Than Ever", "Put a Date on It", "They Ain't Want Me to Know", "Dopechella", "Battle", "Bounce That", "Big Home", "Untrapped".

Rating: 7.5/10.
