Fred the Godson — Payback

Last album made in life by Frederick Thomas aka Fred the Godson, rapper from the Bronx who had emerged in the underground scene after a long period in the mixtapes circuit.

This 22-minute, 9-cut work doesn't do him justice: the album starts after a couple of minutes, with a tribute to the celebrated Lou Diamonds made together with the Rochester MC 38 Spesh, which delivers with an energetic and hardcore style on a boom bap production with downtempo drum and good samples. The next two choices retaining a good sound, with dry, vibrant drums and pianos that help the slow and fluid flow. The rest of the tape curls up on questionable trap rhythms ("Let It Ring", "It's All Basic") and on the other Trust featuring, that of Klass Murda in "Sweet Nothings". The title track is a happy exception to these generic tunes, boasting an excellent boom bap rhythm and a Fred the Godson inspired irregular rap. 6.7/10.
