Original Flavor — Beyond Flavor

Ski supports T-Strong and DJ Chubby Chub on the second album of the Bronx group Original Flavor.

Fifteen joints, forty-five minutes of listening: the performers play a lot on their strength, the slow and pleasantly smoothness flow, from a technical point of view there aren't many objections to be made, however, lyrically the group doesn't say much and focuses exclusively on braggadocio bars. If you don't focus on the lyrics, it's a pretty fluid album, thanks to the crisp production made by Ski Beats: the rhythms mirror the sound of the period on the East Coast, fresh jazzy boom bap, with great samples and a slow and hard drum.

Thanks to this proven formula, the producer manages to bring out even these two generic MCs ("Blowin' up Da Spot", with its Christmas bells in the background and fast delivery; "All That", sample dope, tight drum, Michelle Mitchell offered a good rnb background vocals, fast and smooth delivery); the album is enhanced by the presence of guests, some prominent, including a young Jay-Z and Damon Dash. Shawn Carter proves to be the best in these fifteen tracks, taking the album with the performances in "Many Styles", where he goes off to the other guest Freshco, expressing a great rapping style, and especially in "Can I Get Open", first song, where he delivers the best bars of the project with a smooth flow on a light and fresh jazzy boom bap.

The album, released by Atlantic, doesn't sell many copies and the group is absorbed in the Roc-A-Fella, a label founded by Jay-Z, Damon Dash and Kareem Burke, where Ski will have a fundamental role in launching Jay's career.

Rating: 6/10.
