DJ Quik — Safe + Sound

Three years after the previous record, DJ Quik, inspired by Dre's work, understands the potential of live instrumentation and uses it as a major component in building the rhythms for his third studio album, of which he is the unique producer. Guests are Hi-C, Gangsta D, Playa Hamm, 2nd II None, General Jeff, 2-Tone, and Kam.

The author anticipates in the intro what the themes of the next 66 minutes will be: sex, some random gangsterism. In this regard, it's necessary to give props to The Source which manages to write an entire review on this record without ever mentioning the word "sex" once nor indicate that half of these songs are sexual, especially in the first part or that the lyrics are repetitive, tiring and that lower the overall quality of the project.

The author's rapping style is competent, has good flow, and on the other hand, the production is excellent: the rhythms are funky, g-funk, smoothness, with excellent bass lines, good drums, good samples, not too shrill synths and a commendable instrumentation. Released by Profile Records, despite DJ Quik being in Suge Knight's Death Row (credited as executive producer), the album was warmly received by critics and audiences, becoming his most commercially successful record, reaching #1 in the rap chart and being certified gold.

It's a good West Coast party record, coherent, very vicious, hot, summery, which doesn't give up on cold tracks like the numerous dissing to rivals AMG and MC Eiht — the cover with the red box and red cap doesn't seem casual — including "Dollaz + Sense", which comes down as one of the best dissing of the period. Recommended for fans of funk and sex rap, it maintains a replay value for all others exclusively thanks to the fresh and positive music.

Rating: 7.5/10.
