Second or perhaps third studio album by Al Kapone, one of the first rappers to impose a dominant funk sound in Memphis, Tennessee.
In this 50-minute project divided into 13 songs, the MC maintains funky rhythms by combining them with the typical atmosphere of the Memphis scene, finding excellent results: he mainly recites hardcore and gangsta lyrics with a slow and energetic style, supported by haunting, dark, melodic, funky and soul samples and by a pounding, lively, tight, slow, downtempo/midtempo, often minimal drum machine.
Towards the middle of the record, it moves even closer to the West Coast, bringing mobb music and g-funk productions to the table, without giving up guitar riffs, cheap g-funk synths and dope strings, approached with a calmer and more relaxed rapping. compared to the first part. In its concluding section, the album features exclusively funky boom baps, with tight minimal drums and decent samples, on which Al Kapone plays his last bars before the farewell. While without slipping or making obvious mistakes, the record doesn't feature immediate banger or classic cuts, which keeps it from being one of the best records of the Illmatic year, 7/10.
