In 1994, DJ Paul released what may actually be his number 15 cassette.
The tape is opened by a light intro, with a splendid piano sample. Lord Infamous assists DJ Paul in delivering "Smoke a Junt", dope rhythm with beautiful samples, and single line loops. The third choice is simple and minimal, dark rhythm. The producer maintains the dark mood even for the next cut, a skeletal boom bap with light snare drum, dark samples and a slow flowing rapping. The following track features good samples on basic production and honest delivery. The sixth choice has a snare drum and single-line looped, slow flowing slow rapping by DJ Paul. It follows a rhythm with a single looped line and slow delivery, with beautiful samples. Skit, then "Killaz of South Parkway", a cut that doesn't stand out from the others.
"Silent Night", instead, it stands out as one of the best tracks of the edition: dark minimal boom bap, dark and dark samples, slow syncopated skinny drum machine, simple hook, slow and spoken delivery. The following is a sample of a bell in the background, then delivers in slow smooth rapping with scratches scattered in the background. "Bustaz Betta Make Way (Mix)" is even better, with a single line for the simple hook and a smooth honest delivery on splendid lean boom bap with jazzy dope samples.
Choice number twelve features a snare drum, decent jazzy samples, and a single looped line for the hook, honest cut, while the track "DJ Paul (Mix)" boasts a skinny rhythm with a slow skeletal drum, and a couple of simple loops, good the second gloomy sample. "Take a Lick" has an excellent dark piano sample and others, accompanied by other good samples, sparse syncopated drum, some rapping lines. A thematically similar song follows on a slow and heavy drum, then comes the thanks, which precede the last joint: beautiful sample from a classic, boom bap, very slow drum, smooth delivery.
Solid cassette by DJ Paul, recommended for Memphis rap fans. 7/10.
