Down South — Lost in Brooklyn

Unique album by hip-hop group formed by Shawn J Period, Myorr "The DJ" Jahna and Jeremy "Soda Pop" Jones. Shawn J Period takes care of the production, leaving some beats for T-Ray, Stretch Armstrong and the Beatnuts, while the guests are The Funkaholic and Bobbito Garcia.

The disc is short for the time, consisting of 11 tracks + 3 interludes and a total of about three quarters of an hour of listening: the lyricism is quite average, while the production is pleasantly East Coast, with boom bap rhythms, hard midtempo drums, samples of horns and beautiful breaks. Among the many tracks, the single "Southern Comfort" stands out: boom bap jazzy with good samples, including the soul track "The Memory" by Roy Ayers and nostalgic vibes, drum midtempo pounding, confident, smooth, hardcore delivery and splendid sudden break in the ending from "The Bridge" by MC Shan. "Spin da Boddle" boasts a good boom bap with slow and tight dry drum hard, and few tight and haunting looped piano keys to support the slow and confident flow of the rappers: the tune is closed by an excellent break of dusted cymbals and a light drum on which Bobbito spits the latest vicious bars with a light-hearted style. Released by Big Beat, the album didn't achieve satisfactory commercial results and the group disbanded, leaving this hidden gem among the numerous hip-hop records of '94.

Rating: 7/10.
