No Face — Wake Your Daughter Up

Originally known as Funktion Freaks, No Face is a hip-hop duo formed by Mark "Mark Sexx" Skeete and Shawn "The Shah" Trone. The group became controversial due to the nature of its obscene and exaggerated lyrics, their songs aren't play in radio stations even with the censored versions. The duo signs with dance label Great Jones, sub-label of Island Records, releasing a couple of singles, "Revenge of the Bat (He's a Bat Mutha)" and "Hump Music", the latter enters in Australia chart. In 1990 No Face signs with Russell Simmon's Rush Associated Labels and published their disk through their own label No Face Records, affiliated to Rush. The production is realized by No Face, the guest are 2 Live Crew and BWP.

This is a wack LP composed mainly of poor simplistic beats and a delivery in easygoing, extravagant and screamed slow-rapping. Some rhythms are accessible, others are annoying, the two performers play for a dozen cuts with a joyful flow, focusing the album entirely on the female figure with bravado and irreverence, without sparing the classic spoken-sung ballad ("Socially Speaking"). From the tape are extracts the singles "Half", who charts among rnb songs, and the song with 2 Live Crew, the CD is released in US market by Columbia and in Japan the next year under Sony, without managing to gather a decent following and thus ending up slipping on the 2 Live Crew bandwagon in their attempt to jump on it and cover themselves in easy, very easy money.

Four years later, the guys try to get back into the circuit snatching a deal with Interscope for a single ("No Brothas Allowed") whose possibile positive response from public would probably have led to a new album distributed by Atlantic, but even in this case their piece falls into the void. In essence, it's one of the most ignorant efforts of the year, maybe it could tear you a few laughs sometimes, but to avoid any kind of catastrophe, I do not recommend listening to it. If you want to listen to a bad album from the 1990, you can't go wrong with Hammer.
