Ray West & Zilla Rocca — Rowhouse Whispers EP

Collaborative EP between Philadelphia rapper Zilla Rocca & New York producer Ray West, consisting of seven short cuts, including intro and a remix, for a total of about a quarter of an hour of listening. The tape is released under their respective labels Three Dollar Pistol Music and Red Apples 45. Entirely produced by Ray West, it boasts the guests Alaska and Curly Castro, member of the group Wrecking Crew and of the duo Grift Company along with Zilla Rocca.

Ray West arrives with one of his quite-typical production, light jazzy boom bap, with light skinny drum and accessible samples, while Zilla Rocca drops bars with a slow and smooth delivery style. Probably the best choices come at the end. "Faces Known / Album Drop" boasts a jazzy boom bap with midtempo drum and elegant piano to accommodate Zilla's flowing slow style. The remix of "88 Style" made by ShaneGreat, features a fresh soundscape with close lively drum and good female soulful samples, the MC here delivers inspired. Enjoyable tape, recommended for Wrecking Crew fans, even if the boy sounds a bit lazy sometimes. 6.5/10.
