Gangsta Dre — Gang Banging Poetry

Debut album by Sacramento-based, Oakland-born rapper, Andre "Gangsta Dre" Crump. The production is performed almost entirely by Marvin Scott, Gangsta Dre does the beat of "Jackin Mission", Bootsy & Roger Troutman co-produce "Mandatory Murder". Marvin Scott, Brian Porter, J-Roc are in charge of the keyboards. Guests are Mr. K-Geeta, Kyky Brown, K-Luv, Lil Pig, Low "G", Mike Mayfield, Mitchel, P-Dubb, Ronie and San Francisco rapper Melly-Mel (many had this moniker in the Bay). The rhythms are simple, a dry and poor downtempo drum mediocrely supports the mobb samples and gentle strings chosen by Marvin Scott, which adds casual, cheap synths that sound distant from the beat, they are almost aesthetic and don't particularly ruin the tracks.

The author is Gangsta Dre, the title is "Gang Banging Poetry", so yeah, the themes revolve around the generic and bland, raw and unspicy thug. The salt arrives immediately and even seems to sweeten these sour and scarce drums, giving flavor to the mobb samples and synths, then it disappears from the table and the palate suffers: after half a dozen minutes, there comes a dry section that doesn't tell you anything, with a slow and decent rap. When someone finally brings the salt back to the table, the meal is almost over: "Sacramento Summertime" stands out as the most delicious dish, thanks to the classic sample "Yearning for Your Love" by the Gap Band which returns relaxed vibes and on which the MC flows with a regular and velvety rap style. There's the eight-nine minute posse "Survival on the Battlefield" as the final pre-outro piece, but you can send the dish back, the drum is dry and tight, the samples are average, nine to ten people spit something into it, I don't care and they don't do much to get interested, they all sound the same. Consisting of 10 tracks and approximately 47 minutes of listening time, the CD is released by Funk Central and Black Market Records. In 1996 and in 2005, is published again with four tracks added, under Funk Central and Black Armor, respectively.

Rating: 6/10.
