G-Slimm — Fours Deuces & Trays

Unique album by Kenneth "G-Slimm" Jackson, a young rapper from New Orleans, part of the local trio Black Menace along with Threat and J-Dawg.

Precise and D-Funk make a production that mirrors that of the West Coast, with great funky rhythms, relaxed mobb samples and some synths. The title track opens the disc is one of the best cuts, made up of excellent beat and confident, slow delivery. The short "The Chronic Man" follows, another praiseworthy choice, then "Back on My Block": on a lively and sparkling funky musical carpet, with an honest drum and cheerful samples, Mystikal brings out an eclectic performance along with Slimm G and the rest of Black Menace. The first three tracks are well made and the rest of the record doesn't hold the same level of quality most of the time: G-Slimm keeps the record fresh, varying both in the topics, mainly gangsta, and in the delivery style, sometimes hardcore, sometimes quiet. The record emerges among the best to come out of the New Orleans scene in this period, and allows him to be noticed by Relativity Records: in October 1996, the period in which he's working on his second album, shortly before signing with the label, G-Slimm was killed in a shooting.

Rating: 7/10.
