Young MC — Brainstorm

This is the sophomore jinx of Marvin Young aka The Young M.C. Man, who produces the entire effort. Vail Johnson plays bass, Paul Jackson Jr. plays guitar, to the drums are credited Alphonse Mouzon and Mike Bordin.

Easily, easily, one of the worst albums of the year. The first part holds up quite well in memory of his hit "Bust a Move", but the second part completely fails. Exhausting album, Young MC plays safely and indoors in his home field, sheltered from the rain, not from that of criticism: his three themes end immediately and this time there is no other hit to save the day.

The rhythms chosen here are soft, simplistic and skeletal, a funky done very badly in the first part combined with hip house / dance pop songs in the second: on this production the rapper delivers bored, lazy, weaker than the rhythms themselves, the pop bridges they're as ridiculous as everything else and even the longest tracks go almost unnoticed, at least until the triptych of final hip house songs that definitively kills the project. Prohibitive to even try to save something here.

Distributed by Capitol Records (EMI), pushed by the singles "That's the Way Love Goes" and "Keep It in Your Pants", the disk is welcomed by negative reviews from specialized critics and is certified gold by RIAA for half a milion physical copies sold in two months, entering the Billboard 200 and going better in New Zealand (#42), where his singles are more appreciated.

Rating: 3/10.
