The Jaz — To Your Soul

Second and final effort for the rapper who had the merit of having made a young Jay-Z debut. The production is realized by The Jaz, Prince Paul, Chad Elliott, and Vandy C. Jay-Z is guest in a couple of songs in this disk.

Here the guest has a couple of appearances, and pops out in some uncredited cuts, livening up the record with a superior performance compared to his friend Jaz, who here offers a relaxed and braggadocio delivery, often not too much beyond the decent on jazzy rhythms minimal, tight and simple, accessible and generic, sometimes frantic to offer urgent bars. "The Originators" is the gem here, although the rhythm too loud obscures some line spitted too quickly.

Released under EMI USA, the record is pushed by a couple of singles, "The Originators" and "A Groove (This Is What U Rap 2)", both charted the top 20 of rap singles. Poor sales results of the album lead the label to drop The Jaz, who later decides to devote himself to the activity of record producer. In the years that followed, Jaz helped launch Jay-Z's career and secure his deal with Def Jam, and helped launch the group The LOX, producing one of their first demos.

Rating: 6/10.
