Killah Priest — Behind the Stained Glass

Killah Priest's sixth studio album. DJ Woool produces over half the album, while other beats are provided by Kount Fif, Thoro Tracks, Magnetic, C Sik, Dirty Needlez and 4th Disciple. Guests include 60 Second Assassin of Sunz of Man, Jeni Fujita, Allah Sun and Victorious. The cover art suggests that this album is tied to the author's previous solo album, "The Offering", released the year before.

Thematically, the author stays in his comfort zone with lyrics about religion, the Bible, violence, spirituality, socio-conscious excerpts and bravado composing his typical cryptic battles, focusing on a medieval concept. There are also some personal forays in the tracks "I Believe" and "Profits of Man". These writings are recited on autopilot, placing elementary hooks, sometimes so poor that they ruin the tracks, when these are not leveled by a bland rhythm. Most of the production is handled by DJ Woool, who unfortunately doesn't do a pleasant job here: overall, the set of beats offered here is poor, some production work, the rest is pretty low-level for a Killah Priest effort, the beats sound cheap, simplistic, old. C Sik at the mix fails to fix these musical choices made of poor drums, rusty raw strings and violins, weak bass, poor keyboards, watered-down samples.

Released by Good Hands and his own Proverbs Records, the album is distributed by Traffic: lacking strong pieces, overall, the product doesn't sound good and turns out to be one of his worst efforts so far. "Profits of Man" is a rare high note on this CD: on one of the few productions that DJ Woool gets right, thanks to pleasant violins that elevate even a poor drum and the regular flow of the Brooklyn emcee, Priest offers a personal glimpse by going back over his artistic career. The cut almost sounds like "Audiobiography" by Hell Razah (ft. Shabazz) from almost the same period, here Masada goes down with the other Sunz of Man 60 Second Assassin (who only plays the outro) to make his own personal version.

Rating: 6/10.
