Feeling deeply deceived by the monetary remuneration that would have been due to him by the contract, in 1989 Ice Cube left the group because of Jerry Heller who would soon get rich behind the NWA.
Cube's debut is one of the best albums of the year, so the group decides to respond with an EP of over twenty minutes: without their ghostwriter and best performer, NWA are based on the alchemy between Eazy-E and MC Ren, on the vulgar gangsta lyrics of Ren himself and The D.O.C. and on the powerful and hardcore production of Dre and Yella.
This effort contains four tracks and an outro, a porn cut in which they lyrically go far beyond the obscene at the time by introducing a type of sexual skit that will be abused in hip hop, an excellent sequel to "Fuck the Police" and two diss tracks to Ice Cube that give rise to a long feud continued with the next album and closed definitively by Cube with "No Vaseline", a lacerating dissing that asphalts the group.
Eazy-E is at his best, but MC Ren on his own goes stronger than the rest of the group, is easily the best here and takes the scene by showing that the group can hold up well even without O'Shea Jackson, despite the lyrics begin to take a more vulgar and obscene turn: it doesn't get the acclaim of the insiders, but it manages to sell pretty well reaching gold in 1990 and platinum in 1992.
EP gangsta tight, compact, excellent, more than a good follow-up of "Str8 Outta Compton", it's the ideal appetizer to "Efil4zaggin".
Rating: 8/10.
