AAVV — The Hill That's Real

"The Hill That's Real" is a compilation of ten cuts by five artists from Brownsville, Brooklyn, NY, released by 4th Broadway Records and distributed via Island Records: the artists provide some underground, hard and hardcore hip-hop, with topics varying between street and g themes, most of the lyrics are written by Jamal Grinnage, most of the beats are provided by Silver D of Lords of Funk.

"Bring the Ruckus" is the first cut of the edition, made by Lil' Fame: simple and skinny funky production, skeletal drum machine, vibrant and minimal syncopated, smooth syncopated hardcore delivery of Fame at the debut, good cut. Follows "Wrek the Art" by ASAP, with his lyrics, lean funky rhythm, lean and tight syncopated drum machine, good fast flowing delivery of the rapper. The third song is a posse track with Big Ken, Fame, Sean Mic and Smuve-Ruff: lyrics by Fame and Sean Mic, simple jazzy-funky rhythm with lean tight syncopated drum, functional hook, good delivery of the performers.

The future member of Mash Out Posse also makes the title track: simple production, skinny funky with tight skeletal syncopated drum machine, simple chorus, the rapper's smoothness syncopated hardcore delivery is similar to his previous solo tune. Big Ken gives away the only sex song of the edition, with tightly looped female sample and regular delivery. ASAP's second and final solo track, decent quick syncopated delivery on meager funky beats.

Big Ken insists on sexual themes with "4 Star Bitch", funky skinny beat provided by Broke Ass Mo from Brooklyn, decent delivery. Song number eight is Grinnage's third and final solo: funky skeletal tight rhythm, tight syncopated skinny drum machine, good smooth syncopated delivery. The last two choices are reserved for 411 aka Marney Phillips, who delivers lively flowing on a simple, tight production of Broke Ass Mo from Brooklyn, and for Big Posse on a skeletal funky tight beat made by Silver D.

Rating: 6/10.
