Soundtrack of 70 minutes and 16 tracks, distributed by Jive Records. Production and lyrics are obscure and reflect the atmosphere of the movie.
The disc is opened and closed by Spice 1, boasting the participation of MC Eiht, Ant Banks, Too Short, Cold 187um, Kokane, Da Lench Mob, DJ Quik, Brand Nubian, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Boogie Down Productions, Guru and UGK, among others. Rhythms are provided by E-A-Ski, MC Eiht, Ant Banks, Dangerous Crew, Cold 187um, QD III, Brand Nubian, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Guru, Pimp C and DJ Quik. There are a lot of talented artists here, there's a lot of quality, but Spice 1 starts in a deadly way and isn't picked up by anyone.
Funky boom bap made by E-A-Ski & CMT, perfect slow drum, g-funk synths, beautiful sample, smooth slow delivery, dope cut. MC Eiht, Da Lench Mob, DJ Quik, Brand Nubian, CL Smooth, KRS-One, Guru, Pimp C & Bun B, all go strong and provide solid tunes, nevertheless, no one touches the initial one. There are also several R&B songs ("Top of the World", "You Been PLayed", "Unconditional Love") quite average. On the downside, production is pretty cheap in "All Over a Ho" and "Stop Lookin 'at Me": in particular, the first one, made by Cold 187um, is unhappy, combining a rhythm and a sample both confused and poor, which together with an indecent and pounding drum machine, give life to an almost unlistenable beat. Among the best choices, "Death Becomes You", which sees the debut of YG'z, protégé group of Pete Rock & CL Smooth: great boom bap jazzy, sample from "H.N.I.C.", Clifford Jordan classic, slow drum, smooth delivery of the performers. It's considered as one of the best soundtracks in hip-hop.
Highlights: "Nigga Gots No Heart", "Streiht Up Menace", "Guerillas Ain't Gangstas", "Lick Dem Muthaphuckas", "Death Becomes You", "'P' is Still Free", "Pocket Full of Stones (Port Arthur Remix)", "Can't Fuck Wit a Nigga".
Rating: 7/10.
