Eric Wright was born and raised in Compton. He had to make his own way in a densely criminal environment and, as a criminal himself, managed to stay alive until the age of twenty. It's easy to write and to read, doing it is another story. Around the age of twenty, he manages to join the N.W.A hip hop group and has enough money to open his own independent record label: he founded Ruthless Records. With NWA, he releases N.W.A. and the Posse, an effort that achieves considerable success and that launches the group towards "Str8 Outta Compton", the second studio album that projects NWA towards legend. The album is released by Priority and Eazy-E's Ruthless, which, a month after that classic, releases its debut album, "Eazy-Duz-It".
The album sounds like a group album by NWA, the lyrics are mainly provided by The D.O.C., Ice Cube and Ren, while the production is the work of Dr. Dre & DJ Yella. Based on simple and violent braggadocio lyrics, Eazy-E offers a charismatic and brutal performance, delivering its bars in a hardcore tone with a violent and lethal rapping, inventing the gangsta rap almost from zero and in a completely relaxed, effortless way, it's an album made by a drug dealer who is just having fun.
MC Ren plays a very important role here, although he's often not credited, he's present throughout the album and offers a level performance in support of Eazy-E. On the productive side, Dr. Dre's effort's commendable: his funky, sublime rhythms and full of excellent samples allow Eazy to be raised to a state that technically should not be his, that of one of the best rappers of the West Coast of the period. This is a beautiful spin-off of "Straight Outta Compton", almost classic, the first gangsta album.
Highlights: "2 Hard Mutha's", "Boyz-N-The Hood (Remix)", "Eazy-Duz-It", "We Want Eazy", "Radio".
Rating: 8.6/10.
