Menace Clan — Da Hood

Unique album by the South Central Los Angeles duo Menace Clan, formed by Walter "Assassin" Adams and Dante "D. Miller" Miller. The rhythms are provided by N.O. Joe, Big Jessie, Mike DeanScarface, Swift, D. Miller, Freddie Young and Michael Banks. Bushwick Bill is present twice as the only guest on the LP.

On a particularly cheap and poor production, the two rappers bring out a record of 52 minutes and 13 pieces, which revolves around socio-conscious, political and anti-white themes, mixed with choices on street life, ghetto, violence, crime and gangsterisms. There are also well-constructed songs, however, the two guys don't excel in the rapping department and in the choice of rhythms, and it comes out an erratic and incoherent album, inferior to lyrically similar releases like the brutal debut of Lench Mob. The tracklist is a continuous swing that alternates solid tracks and other weak ones.

At its best, rap is decent on these dry, harsh drums and melodic funky samples, while Bushwick Bill delivers the best performance on the CD with a tidy and velvety style, easily outperforming the main rappers. After much wandering, the duo manage to sign a contract with Rap-A-Lot and get a Noo Trybe distribution which is supported by EMI (via Virgin), but probably, the label fails to identify the right market for the group and the record sells little, stopping at box number 44 of the rap albums and prematurely ending the duo's rap career. 6/10.
