Madd Hatta — All About Me

In 1995, Houston, Texas rapper Ben "Madd Hatta" Thompson aka Dat Mad Hatta (later known as Mista Madd) released one of his first hip-hop albums, a twelve-track cassette.

Madd Hatta handled most of the production, with Crazy C (an engineer and producer for Scarface, Bushwick Bill, Willie D, Big Mello, and Ganksta NIP, among others), Def Jam Blaster (also on keyboards or scratches for the Geto Boys and Big Mello), and Mic Foxx (a radio jockey at WJPC in Chicago). The producers were supported by a large live setup featuring David Donaldson on bass, Corey "Funky Fingaz" Stoot on guitar, and Terrance "Bearwolf" Williams on keyboards. Guests are rappers Lez Moné, Kendra, Craig aka Craig G, Jay Mac aka J-Mac and Jammin JJ, as well as singers Nikki T., J. Reale, Tanedra, 350, Crazy C, DJ Blaster and Rick.

In this project, Madd Hatta copies the sound of Master P, who brings g-funk from LA to Houston in an attempt to have commercial success. The rapper performs the entire tape with a relaxed delivery style, aided by backup singers and some guest rappers. There are several ballads, the album closes with a ballad. The success of the tape brings the boy back to the studio to add five more tracks (two skits; "Prelude", "Just a Dream", "Prelude", "Gangsta M.C.'s Journey" and "Where I'm From (El's Theme)", where the keyboards are played by John "Maestro" Hilliard) and to print the project on CD again in 1995 for the same label Groove Makers. Good quality gangsta record even if the synthesizers are not among the best of the period. 7/10.
