Benny the Butcher & 38 Spesh — Trust the Sopranos: '83 Miami Edition (Big Ghost Ltd. Remix)

Remix album made by producer Big Ghost LTD on the collaborative album between Buffalo rapper Benny the Butcher and Rochester rapper and producer 38 Spesh, released three months earlier and which had been a disappointment. In addition to Big Ghost, instrumentation is credited with Hector Puente Colon Jr. & The Santiago Men's Basketball Philharmonic Orchestra, the same act behind the instruments of some of Big Ghost's masterpieces including Westside Gunn & Conway's classic "Griselda Ghost" (2015), "Aguardiente" by Crimeapple (2018), "Van Ghost" by Ankhlejohn (2018), "A Bullet for Every Heathen" by 38 Spesh (2019), "Carpe Noctem" (2019), "No One Mourns the Wicked" by Conway (2020), "All Praise is Due" by KAAN (2020) and "If It Bleeds It Can Be Killed" by Conway (2020). The cover looks better than the origin, but it's not yet fully inspired.

From the first moments, this tape sounds much better than the original: hear how good Elcamino's voice sounds on Big Ghost's boom bap. Who knows what the boy could do on an album made entirely by the producer. Here, he places perfect samples and an excellent drum. "Price of Fame" is opened by Klass Murda, then there's Ransom's excellent attack flowing smooth, regular, velvety, dope over an interesting boom bap. Che Noir flies on this rhythm. I believe that "Puddle of Pain" is an original track: Elcamino spits rap bars with a calm and fluid flow on a light boom bap, with good samples and drums, closes Street Justice with a raw, rough, dirty delivery. "Spineless" is the first song that Big Ghost manages to transform into a masterpiece: boom bap with eighties disco vibes, excellent samples, dirty, dusty, hard drum, Benny and Ransom dope both.

Ampichino's contribution is excluded from this new version of "Tokyo Drift" which begins with the second stanza of Spesh, to which the producer adapts his own rhythm: the electric guitar licks are as raw as the flow of the MC, hard midtempo drum and an ethereal flute sample to lighten the load. Second [original] verse of 38 Spesh, slow, rough, good flow, great effort by Big Ghost in what is one of the weakest pieces on the original record. "Load Up" features a gorgeous sax sample and perfect downtempo drum, which elevates both Rick Hyde's hook and Heem's delivery, in a track I had ignored three months ago. Big Ghost chooses other electric guitar licks to support some samples and the drum trap: rhythm left to breathe, good flow by Benny, decent hook by Klass Murda, then Che Noir arrives confident, clearly superior to the others. On a competent rhythm she goes strong, on a beat as good as this she's unstoppable. "Silent Death" is the eighth and last track remixed by Big Ghost, excellent drum, fantastic triumphal rhythm, boom bap appropriate to the style of Rick Hyde and Chase Fetti.

Overall, it's a great project. Rhythms of Big Ghost, rap that comes mainly from Trust artists, affiliates and friends. Obviously superior to the original, the production and removal of some tracks ("Immunity", "Long Short Story" and "Blue Money") make the difference.

Highlights: "Price of Fame", "Spineless", "Load Up", "Love Left".

Rating: 7.5/10.
