Pop Smoke — Meet the Woo, Vol. 2 [mixtape]

Sequel to the previous year's mixtape, his second career tape, released two weeks before the rapper was killed during a home invasion.

Bashar Jackson aka Pop Smoke, helped bring and establish British drill in New York, consolidating a style that is still struggling to catch on in the US charts. However, most of this tape is very weak: all tracks sound the same, with mediocre trap production and uninspired delivery. The rhythms aren't bad, but somehow most of the tracks don't work due to some weird commercial choices.

The guests sound bad, Tjay is the worst of all with an annoying voice on dull rhythms. The second bonus track, "War", might be one of the best productions, with a good sample and a distant accessible drum machine, Pop Smoke seems to be inspired here, but there's a dude mimicking the pigeon call in the background and Tjay delivers quickly, but weak. The other tracks don't work, the few accessible rhythms are marred by ridiculous executions and lame hooks. While lasting just 35 minutes with 13 pieces, the tape manages to be exhausting and forgettable. Good international commercial success, gold record, not recommended. 3/10.
