Planet Asia x 38 Spesh — Trust the Chain

Hailed as one of the weakest efforts of the year and one of the worst albums of Planet Asia, his first effort of 2020 is one of his best in career.

The production of 38 Spesh is good, he maintains the typical boom bap jazzy by providing tight and essential beats, sometimes more tense and dark, other times more cheerful and light, always dope. The lyrics of Planet Asia don't present particular variations from the street and braggadocio themes: the rapper plays it safe with his patented flow and delivery and offers a rough rapping, sometimes with little energy and showing a little harmony with the producer who is putting Rochester on the map of the rap game.

So, the excellent efforts of 38 Spesh are partly thwarted by some commercial errors: several unsuccessful hooks, such as the one left to Rasheed Chappell, which deserved its own verse, and a rather generic proof by Musalini. The disc's greatest strengths come when the rapper lets the beats breathe, aided by female soul samples dope in the background ("Mystery School") and by almost flawless musical soundscapes ("Passport Player", "Juggernauts", "Wintertime"). The strongest piece is blessed by Fred the Godson & Elcamino: both great here on an essential, frenetic, tense and dark jazzy rhythm in a lethal cut without a hook. This half-hour album is very good, consistent and solid, while still including some acceptable errors, is a valid addition to the catalog of both.

Rating: 7/10.
