Jonathan Scott aka Dred Scott's only album is a hidden gem of the golden age. The Los Angeles-based artist is a producer and rapper, also providing the vocal background to himself: he does everything, helped by several engineers, some skilled live instrumentalists and a few guests, such as Adriana Evans, Da Grinch and Big Domino. Tragedy Khadafi provides the background on a couple of tracks.
The CD is amazing, because it features one of the best East Coast productions of the year, and comes from a West Coast rapper: the boom bap that Dred Scott achieves is close to funk and is extraordinary, thanks to good samples, a robust and fresh drum, and an amazing live instrumentation. The MC performs relaxed and conscious lyrics with a dynamic and dope style, managing to entertain and amuse the listener for almost an hour and sixteen tracks (three skits). Released by Tuff Break Records with A&M distribution, the album gets no response from the public or critics, and it's quite curious, because it's an excellent album full of brilliant moments, certainly one of the best of the year.
Rating: 8.7/10.
