Showbiz & AG — Soul Clap EP

The first project released by the duo Showbiz & AG, passed under so many reissues and new formats and today's also known with an eponymous title, the EP's a clear New York effort.

Rodney "Showbiz" Lemay and rapper Andre "AG" Barnes become a duo around 1989, releasing this extended play in 1991 through Showbiz Records. The music is realized by Showbiz and Diamond D. The guests are Diamond D and Lord Finesse, both later included in the supergroup Diggin' in the Crates Crew, along with Showbiz & AG. The tracks are recorded in the Bronx, in the studio of Jazzy Jay, here engineer flanked by Skeff Anselm.

East Coast little fulcrum, from this — supposedly, small/light — work, many underground artists will take inspiration and merge their careers more or less kissed by luck. It presents several good-level tracks like "Party Groove", the title track, and "Diggin' in the Crates" that inaugurates the advent of the D.I.T.C. Also noteworthy is "A Giant in the Mental" (you can find it also without the initial "a" in the title), it deserves because it's a classic New York boom bap, xmas bells, hard drum, lively samples, scratches instead of the chorus, AG flies for three stanzas over this soundscape.

DITC's must-listen, it remains a light and accessible listening in all the different versions you can find.

Rating: 7.5/10.
