Godfather Don — Hazardous

Godfather Don released his debut album in 1991 with Select Records. The production is among the best of the year, tight and jazzy-funky, a well-done boom bap that reflects the NY scene of the early nineties, made by Godfather Don, who proves himself capable on the mic, with an excellent smoothness and rapid flow and a delivery that can vary.

He's an honest MC and a better producer, he builds a solid album as obscure as dope, incredibly ignored by critics, with the only brake of being unoriginal in lyricism. He has a pleasant mood and positive rhythms, a good showcase of a great talent, which the music industry hasn't been able to exploit: in the following years, he becomes one of the producers of the Ultramagnetic MCs and continues to collaborate with Kool Keith in the Cenobites project (1995), later producing for several Queensbridge artists including Nas, Cormega, Blaq Poet and Mobb Deep.

"Sleepin' With the Enemy" and "Black Time" are among the high notes of the whole effort. "Just Begun" is an excellent opening track, rock guitar solo, then skinny and tight drum machine, syncopated and minimal, funky rhythm and immediate rapid, syncopated and flowing delivery of Godfather Don who annihilates the production with an excellent raw but crisp flow. "On & On" presents a simple funky light minimal beat with tight and fast skinny drum, good fast syncopated delivery, classic chorus. The title track is the best-known cut here: splendid piano, dope, minimal funky beat with a quick and tight skinny drum, fast and crisp hardcore delivery of Godfather Don, three verses in which the MC decides to offer three rapping styles different, among the first to change many in one track.

Rating: 8/10.
