Conway the Machine — La Maquina

For his second project of 2021, the third appetizer of his major debut, Conway returns to his roots with a half-trap mix-tape. He makes an effort of 11 songs and about 41 minutes of listening: after an almost solo first section, 2 Chainz, Ludacris, JID, Shots, Elcamino, Jae Skeese, 7xvethegenius, Westside Gunn and Benny the Butcher arrive. In production, there are JEAN BLEU, JR Swiftz, Bangladesh, Maneesh, Cardiak, Sean Momberger, Don Cannon, Murda Beatz, The Alchemist, Motif Alumni, Cozmo Beats, CuBeatz and Daringer. Supported by the production of some talented guys, The Machine shows his dynamism again, focusing mainly on gangsta, thug and vicious bars.

Conway is slow, confident and smooth in the opening cut, on a fantastic boom bap by JR Switfz and JEAN BLEU, consisting of a good sample with a hard midtempo drum, however, the rest of the tracks in the first part play against him. Bangladesh, Maneesh, Cardiak, Sean Momberger and Don Cannon all disappoint, bringing out decent and average trap beats, the rapper's pen isn't very inspired, but he keeps the songs afloat thanks to his lively flow. The sample is from Golden Half's "ゴールデン・ハーフの24000回のキッス", a cover of "24 Mila Baci" by Italian Adriano Celentano.

The second part of this tape is noticeably better than the first, thanks to the contributions of many guests over better soundscapes. The Alchemist immediately blesses the project in "200 Pies", with one of the best rhythms: high-pitched melodic female sample from "Can't Be Alone" by Hodges, James and Smith, snare drum downtempo almost-inaudible, Conway lets the rhythm breathe and attacks it with a slow, smoothness, flawless, dope flow, followed by an acceptable contribution of 2 Chainz.

JR Swiftz is credited with Motif Alumni in the production of "Sister Abigail": it's not a weak cut, but it's not at the level of the best choices, despite a solid rhythm and a good rap from the performers of Buffalo, with rising artists Jae Skeese and 7xvethegenius you may have already known from the deluxe version of Conway's previous album, "From King to a GOD". Jae Skeese has his third and final spot in the eighth joint, but in all the effort he's not surprising, perhaps little favored by the rhythms. "Scatter Brain" presents JID & Luda alongside Conway on a trap rhythm with elegant piano: JID delivers with a great style, while Ludacris isn't evil.

Track number ten boasts one of Elcamino's best performances of the year, looks fit on a lively drum, while also offering a sung chorus. The Machine doesn't disappoint, Shots closes, rapper also present in the previous Conway tape: to note the sample from the ending of the cult movie "The Usual Suspects" (1995). After thirty-five minutes, the album ends with a Griselda posse: Daringer behind the keyboards, Conway, Benny and Westside on the mic. Fantastic guitar sample that echoes freely, hard midtempo drum distant in the background, perfect rhythm. The trio realizes another dope cut with amazing flows: Benny is the better, but Conway has one of his finest flows, and Gunn closes calm, awesome.

Released by Empire, Griselda and Drumwork, Conway's label, it's a solid tape with some excellent traits. Paradoxically, despite the great talent of the MC, the project suffers more in the initial section than in the second part, in any case, it's a good follow-up to "From King to a God" musically, Griselda stans should at least listen to the best tracks of this effort.

Rating: 6/10.
