Showbiz & AG — Take It Back

Five seasons after "Mugshot Music", Show & AG drop a new effort through DITC Studios and Slice-of-Spice, with a CD limited edition to 1000 copies. The production is realized by Buckwild, Lord Finesse, Motif Alumni, E-Blaze and Diamond D. The guests are DJ Premier, A Bless, John Robinson, Rock Marciano and OC.

The disk is composed by 14 pieces with a couple of bonus tracks. There is nothing impressive in the cuts that came out of this inconsistent tape, they're more or less mediocre, unfortunately. "Disappointing" isn't the right word to describe this effort, but from those who have produced classic ("Soul Clap", 1991) and solid records ("Full Scale EP", 1998; "Live Hard", 2007) are expected above average quality.

This project, on the other hand, is average: DJ Premier introduces the EP on a fantastic jazzy rhythm credited to Showbiz, a forerunner for the title track, where – not surprisingly... – AG doesn't sound inspired despite a good boom bap dark jazzy hardcore provided by Show. Unsuitable and unsolicited help from A Bless, the major guest of this CD with four appearances, who delivers in a disturbing and timed way on a simple, essential and gloomy production (jazzy again).

Showbiz improves in the next track, producing an excellent dark and tense jazzy rhythm that acts as a carpet for Roc Marciano who tries to kill the cut; awkward Andre the Giant, decent John Robinson at the opening. "The Answer" is quite average (dark and tense jazzy rhythm, sounds good), "Always Sound Hungry" falls below average, with a more aggressive A Bless attacking the fast, annoying and bleak soundscape, AG starts already resigned and delivers poorly. "Breathe Easy" is one of the weakest cuts in the LP, with an alternative, essential and decent jazzy beat that Andre the Giant cannot interpret: something musically bad comes out of it.

Much under Show & AG standard, 6/10.
