Maestro Fresh Wes — Black Tie Affair

Sophomore for Maestro Fresh Wes, a Canadian rapper who in the early nineties tried to cross the border and push himself into the US rap landscape, bouncing back with the meager consolation of having snatched some Canadian awards.

His second album is a solid and consistent effort, better than his debut, with a sophisticated funky and jazzy production, a lean and lively drum machine, and a smooth and technically fluid delivery with which he spits political, socio-conscious and pro-black themes. The remix of "Private Symphony" is a ballad with a commercial crossover flavor that boasts a minimal simplistic rhythm with skinny and slow drum and a delivery between speech and singing, but excluding this piece, it's a good album that has several strong points, with excellent elements such as elegant pianos, female soul hooks, cornets and organs. "The Maestro Zone" is the best tune: simple, lean, minimal and frenetic rhythm, with an excellent bridge on the scratched chorus, cheerful and festive, Maestro Fresh Wes sweeps away the beat with an urgent and deeply flowing delivery style.

Rating: 7/10.
