Leaders of the New School — A Future Without a Past

Leaders of the New School released their debut album in 1991. It's a group from Uniondale, New York, made up of Busta Rhymes, Charlie Brown, Dinco D and Cut Monitor Milo, the latter being the only one don't provide some rapping here.

Yes, there's Busta Rhymes with his reggae flow, but if you listen to the album without looking at who the rappers are, you don't recognize him. The production of the LP is provided in part by Eric Sadler, these are simple funky and somewhat hardcore beats, it's a kind of music inspired by both the Bomb Squad and both the Native Tongues, of which the group is affiliated. There's good chemistry among the rappers, who provide a pretty pleasantly smooth flow over these funky rhythms, while the themes chosen by this trio are based on high school, with all that it entails: it's therefore a teenage, youthful album, fun, fueled by fresh and energetic rhythms and deliveries, however there's no banger or song that stands out above the others. Good album, recommended for Busta fans who want to see how and where he started.

Rating: 7/10.
