Hi-C — Swing'n

Typical sophomore jinx for Crawford "Hi-C" Wilkerson, dude who still has a deal with Tommy Boy Records, allowing him to get this second effort on the Billboard charts. Production is split between Wilkerson and Tony-A, while the thanks are performed with rapper Step over a simple and cheap funky beat provided by LA Jay.

The rhythms chosen here are pretty simplistic, funky boom bap with lean and syncopated drum machine, and other random elements that in most cases only manage to annoy: the intro has an annoying sample tightly looped, the second track has an intro squeaky sung over cheap rhythm and the next one features a g-funk beat with frantic drum and annoying synths looped in the background. These g-funk synths return in "Stank" ft 2nd II None, but they sound very bad.

In the second part of the tape, production begins to improve, but Hi-C's lyricism remains focused on one topic: sex. There are variations, other songs are mostly party, braggadocio and there's a rare socio-conscious cut ("What's Goin' On"), but the rapper here isn't very inspired and can't find different topics to talk about than the debut, not particularly helped by a mediocre production: in "Go It Like That", there's an extravagant sound, light funky boom bap, slow and pounding syncopated skinny drum machine, then come confused g-funk synths to cloud the vibe of the track, confused chorus, effortless slow syncopated delivery of Hi-C and Lil Frogg.

Rating: 5/10.
