Carl Mitchell is already in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the fastest MC when he released his debut in 1992: under the name of Tung Twista, he's one of the first rappers to come out of Chicago, and stands out from other performers of the period for its quick and effortless delivery style.
Lyrically, he remains steadfast on generic braggadocio topics with some Islamic traits, his style is hardcore, but he's far from the gangsta that dominates the West Coast scene and from the hippie rap that dominates the hip-hop scene on the other Coast. The production, made almost entirely by DJ Rhythm, is composed by simple jazzy-funky rhythms, with a lean tight syncopated drum machine, which provide a sound that's not too varied, but is pleasant and accessible. Throughout the album, Twista delivers roughly and when he accelerates, he hits his best tracks: his rapping style is ultra-fast and smooth, the speed he expresses here has never been seen before, but it's always crisp. It's a good listen if you like fast rapping.
Highlights: "Ratatattat". Simple funky jazzy rhythm, let it breathe, tight syncopated skinny drum machine, Twista's fast syncopated smooth delivery, with a fresh style, great jazzy sample synthesized in the background. "Mista Tung Twista". The MC accelerates heavily on this fast-paced jazzy-funky beat, with ultra-fast delivery.
Rating: 7/10.
