After releasing his debut independent album in 2003, Virginia-born rapper Kevin "Kaze" Thomas, who grew up between Virginia and North Carolina, releases a remix album entirely produced by 9th Wonder.
"Locked in Chains" is remixed by Khrysis. The guys pick ten of the best songs from Kaze's previous album and place a competent soulful production to back up Kaze's rap, that seems to be better than usual: he's more inspired, energetic, focused, clearer and more confident than a year ago, as if he had re-recorded the tracks for the remixes. The end result is particularly pleasing, the flow of Kaze and the soul loops of 9th Wonder complement each other well. Sure, it's not the Winston-Salem guy's best work, nevertheless, there are some gems including the first remix of "Soul Dojo" and the K Hill beat in "More Over".
Initially, the tape was released by his Soul Dojo in 2004, then it was released on the Boston label Brick Records and distributed by Traffic in May 2005: this edition features a different cover, two remixes of "Soul Dojo" and two bonus tracks produced by K Hill, including "More Over", a piece featuring Nature as a guest. In the same year, the album is also distributed in Japan by Universal, in a further edition and with a different cover. 7/10.
